Portraits of Afghan Child Refugees
Show the Legacy of Conflict

Around 1.6 million Afghan refugees live within Pakistan’s borders, making up one of the world’s largest refugee communities, according to the United Nations refugee agency. These people have been fleeing persecution and violence in Afghanistan ever since the Soviet invasion in 1979. Despite feeling alienated in Pakistan, many refugees say they wouldn’t take the risk of returning to Afghanistan. Because of the turmoil, generations of Afghan children have been growing up in Pakistan, never going to school and uncertain of their future.

Below is a beautiful series of portraits taken by Muhammed Muheisen for the Associated Press of Afghan children living in Islamabad, Pakistan.
